Dr. Darm, Relay For Life receives the proceeds from the Bowling For Botox charity event on February 18th, 2012 at Grand Central Bowl.

A total of $4,500 was raised and received by the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life of Lake Oswego. The raised funds were from the people with generous hearts, the raffle tickets, and teams that played bowling for a cause! There were 14 total raffle ticket drawings and a door prize with over $1,000 worth of each prizes!

It was a lot of fun and entertainment provided by singer/songwriter rising star Jared Lee, who not only played with a team but also performed live on stage! Jared's debut EP "Falling Through Holes" were on sale after his live performance. Fans were happy to get signed CDs and pictures with Jared!

Special thanks to Grand Central Bowl for providing the venue, truly is Portland's premier entertainment bowling lounge.

Danny Dwyer of KUPL 98.7 FM hosted from 12:00-3:00 pm and Nikki West of Live 95.5 FM hosted from 3:00-6:00 pm. Thank you to Alpha Broadcasting for promoting the charity event and bringing LIVE and KUPL teams on-site!

Joel Iwanaga of KOIN Local 6 interviewed Melissa, office manager of of Aesthetic Medicine, who both played with a team. Also, FOX 12 Oregon interviewed some of the bowlers.

The Relay For Life of Lake Oswego is happening on July 14th, 2012 at Lake Oswego High School in Lake Oswego, Oregon. Looking on the before and afters you can see the wrinkles just disappear and here to talk about it is Dr. Darm of Aesthetic Medicine in Portland, OR.

Botox is a toxin, it paralyzes the muscles. It only stays on the skin for about 4 hours and then it bonds with the nerves and lasts up to about 3 months. The toxic portion is for only about a short time. It is one of the safest injections out there and allergic reaction is so rare.

Dysport is similar to Botox. The molecular weight is a little different from Botox. The DySport spreads out a little bit more evenly and further than the Botox. We actually have some patients that will use Dysport in some area and Botox on the other.

Some people like that Dysport lasts longer and other people like the Botox lasts longer.

The common areas to do Botox on the face are the 'Elevens' or so called the 'mommy lines' - sometimes when Botox is injected on this area it will help with migraines. Unemployment among those over 45 is a national all time high. So unemployed baby boomers are looking to retool themselves to stay competitive in the youth oriented market.

There are number of people out there over 45 looking to get back in the job market and they're feeling like they're looking older and potential employers are seeing them as old.

Fillers can give you an instant sort of a lift especially those areas around the mouth where you sort of look frowny and kind of unhappy and maybe grumpy a little bit. We can get rid of that grumpy look with just a little bit of filling. Juvederm is the one that we use a lot and it is much safer than the older collagen that was used. It can lasts up to a year so it's a nice way to enhance and give you fresh and happy look.

It is better than other treatment because even the lasers can't give you much of an increase especially in the lines around the mouth, and the marionette lines too can be filled in with fillers. You know if you got an interview next week then it's something you can do that is very quick.

Laserlift is our standard. Are you having trouble with acne or acne scarring?

You know there are so many people out there dealing with acne as adults, not just teenagers. Ninety percent of kids and somewhere in range of 20-30 of adults have acne.

Any kind of acne can be treated. From black heads to cystic acne so it all responds to the laser treatments. The lasers kill the bacteria, they repair the skin, they reduce the pore sizes.

Looking at the before and after.
This is a terrific case of a cystic acne that cleared up beautifully with the laser treatments and you can see that this was resistant to other therapy like the accutane and antibiotics.

Here are some acne scarring that can be treated as well. These are very disfiguring and a lot of people have significant emotional trauma from their acne. This is a case of a 30 year old girl who had some acne and it bother her forever and also she had the scarring as well. You could see here on her forehead that not only did her acne improved but her scarring improved as well. It's a nice treatment because it's not the antibiotic and it's not the accutane and not some systemic treatment, it's just a topical treatment and it is very safe, little or now downtime or pain with this procedure.

Normally we would do 6 treatments and generally speaking it can get about 50% improvement on the scars.

Patients can come back to get better but the acne scar treatments are fairly permanent, in other words, they are long lasting. The acne treatments they may have to come back for maintenance treatments and sometimes we may have to use other things adjunctively like the antibiotics.

It's about 45-minute treatment and you walk out without having anything and no one would know that you are undergoing these treatments.

"Actually, as of last Monday's weigh, it's a 118 lbs." she answered.

Wow! Fantastic! So how did you managed to do that? That's a lot!
"Well, I found out about Dr. Darm's program and it turns out it's pretty close to where I live which was very convenient. I went to check it out and the office manager explains the program to me and I was just at the point in my life where I was ready to get healthy. I was very unhappy on how I look and how I felt." Patsy answered back.

"Yes I feel like a whole new person." she said.

I assume you've tried other things before it.

Is it immediate for some of you patients?

Dr. Darm of Aesthetic Medicine went to AMNW on December 15, 2011 with weight loss patients Rick and Kathy Webb to tell us how the medically-supervised weight loss program not only helps you achieve your weight loss goals but can dramatically improve your overall health.

So, Dr. Darm explain first how the weight loss program works.
Well, it's medically-supervised and many of the patients opt to take the food holiday. We do lab test every month, we do an EKG, before they start. And for example like Rick, we need to monitor the level of insulin and so on and those have to be drop very quickly in other words you got to make some changes. So that's why it is so important to be medically supervised the patients.

It's really a good point because as you mentioned your medication has changed and if you are doing it at home on your own and your medication has changed, you maybe over medicated for some point.

Now what do they have to do to maintain their weight?
We do the maintenance program, continue to take shakes, 2 to 3 shakes a day, walk 3 miles a day and of course have regular visits for the reinforcement that we give during the maintenance program.

As we get older, almost everybody gets some, but nobody wants to talk about it, those big blue spider veins. It makes it hard to wear short or that little black party dress and it turns out it's also bad for your health. But there is something you can do about it. We're here with Dr. Darm at Aesthetic Medicine.

"So in her leg where we see just one spider vein, there are tens of thousands of veins here that you really can't see that are functioning completely normal. So this vein actually that you can is see is not functioning normally, it's sluggish where the blood flow in veins that you can't see is normal. These are aberrant veins, the ones that you actually can't see. They're not functioning and you actually improve the functioning of the legs by getting rid of the unsightly spider veins."

Dr. Darm says over half of the women have spider veins. They can be caused by heredity, pregnancy, or standing for long period of time. You can prevent some veins by wearing fix support stockings but if you're past prevention and looking for the cure, a treatment of injections called "Sclerotherapy" is the best option.

"There are lots of laser out there. I've purchased over 5 or 6 lasers to treat spider veins but really the best treatment is the Sclerotherapy. It's actually the chemical that we put into the vein that causes the vein to collapse. Once the vein collapses then there's no blood flow in the vein then within about 72 hours that vein will die. We also put very tight stockings on afterward to help enhance the collapsing molecules with the injection."

The stockings stay on 2 weeks to a month after each treatment. Between 50 and 80 percent of all problem veins can be treated in 2 sessions. Dr. Darm says this high percentage rate is special do at Aesthetic Medicine. Because of the unusual way they perform Sclerotherapy.

"We usually do an hour of treatment and unlike many centers we'll have 2 or 3 people injecting at one time. We'd like to get as much as done in one sitting as we can."

The pain is not too bad and the recovery time is fairly quick. You might be wondering why you need to worry about Sclerotherapy and showing off your legs in the dead of winter.

"Winter is the great time to do this and you should consider the winter months as the months where you can wear these tight fitting stockings for two weeks. Summer, hundred degrees, forget it. That's when everyone wants to do the treatment but really winter thinking ahead say 'I want to look good for spring and summer' now is the time in the winter to do this treatment."

Planning in advance will get you these beautiful legs this summer but Dr. Darm said that looking good is really half of the benefit.

"For a lot of people it's about appearance but really it's about their health, long term as well. In terms of some patients who develop bulging veins or so called varicose veins."

Thanks for watching AMNW on this Monday morning. Unresolved personal issues can often stand in the way of serious weight loss. Here’s Janice Bangs with more.

I am with Dr. Darm this morning at Aesthetic Medicine to talk about their weight management program. What is involved in your weight management program?
Our weight management program is medically-supervised weight loss program and it’s very carefully monitored, it’s very aggressive. The average patient loses 40 to 60 lbs. and many of the patients go away from food, take a food holiday for a while and go to the shakes. It’s extremely effective. The reason is because people lose their appetite as their fasting as if they’re doing it fast. And so it’s not unusual to lose 100 lbs or even more in this program.

And we do have patient Patsy Marquardt this morning. Patsy, what brought you to Aesthetic Medicine?
I had reached a point in my life where I just felt a completely down, the depression, not feeling like I really belong in the society. I’d go on a trip in an airplane and I’d have to be embarrassed to ask for the seatbelt extender. I mean, heaven forbid, going to the restroom and fitting to the door. And going in to a restaurant then wondering where they’re going to sit me, am I gonna fit in that booth and just the embarrassment of all that I think I kind a hit me at a point where “No, I’m not to take this anymore.” I value myself too much.

You also had some personal experience that contributed to you not been able to get below a certain weight point.
Yes, I did. When I was 19, 20 years old I was raped and had some sexual abused after that. Then I gained the weight, kind a protection type of a thing regardless of my family and my loving husband, it just consumed me. And so I decided that I would get some other therapy and the 200 pounds was like when you got below that I would feel attractive and sexy and that was very scary for me, it was a protective mechanism. And between Dr. Darm, Nancie and Marge just compassion and their concern for me and my outside therapy, I’ve been able to get passed that point and it has been a just like great feeling to feel within myself that I am worthy of this. I am worthy of looking like this and that’s been a big load lifted off my shoulders.

And how much weight have you lost overall?
I have lost overall a 142 lbs. I’m not finished yet so I’m not in maintenance yet but the classes I attend with Nancie and Marge getting to this point are fantastic and the help from the other people, the sharing that we do is just remarkable. I can’t say enough about the people here.

A double neck or sagging neck skin doesn’t just make a person self conscious, it could also be very uncomfortable and here’s to tell us about a procedure that can turn back the hands of time. Welcome back from Aesthetic Medicine Dr. Jerry Darm along with one of his patient Rebecka Smith.

Dr. Darm let’s talk about that (sagging neck) because a lot of people have that (double) chin, the neck where everything kind a bulges out and it would not only aesthetically speaking but a comfort issue it could be bad for people.
It can be from weight or genetics, some people that are thin that have the big necks.

What is the procedure for reducing that?
Well, the laser lipolysis, the Lipolift, is what we do and it’s a very small canula that goes underneath the skin.

When you say a canula, what does it mean is it like a needle?
No, really it’s a canula. There‘s a small incision made in the skin that goes underneath the skin and this laser just melts the fat and then you suck it out. And the chin, it tightens the skin as well as reducing the fat. It is a relatively permanent solution.

It removes the fat cells.
Yes. It melts the fat and sucks it out through a very small hole in the skin.

And Rebecka, that’s the procedure that you had for your neck and chin. Why did you decide you wanted to have this done?
Yes. I personally lost 78 lbs. from my own and I’ve seen great gratification all through my body. The face just never went anywhere and skinny Becky wanted it out. I did a lot of research, and Dr. Darm, it was just their office - they’re so calm, they’re nice – I love it!

So you decided to have this procedure because, you said, skinny Becky wanted out, how long did the procedure take?
My appointment was at 11:00 am and I was wrapped and out the doors at 12:30.

What are you friends and family said to you?
I went to Zumba…and this girl keeps on looking at me and I keep on looking at her and she looks familiar. Finally she said “Becky?” and I am like “Yeah”. “You look so different, you look incredible.” I feel incredible.

I can tell you’re happy.

So Rebecka as she describes it, it doesn’t take long time to do.
No, it’s very short and the healing time usually a week or two. There can be a little bit of bruising, a little bit of discomfort but usually very short.

And when those fat cells are removed, they don’t come back.
It really shouldn’t come back unless she were to gain a lot of weight back then it’s possible.

I think anybody who is trying to lose weight, there are parts of the body that just don’t want to play along.
You want a long term solution and that’s what this is.

If she hadn’t lost the weight she lost, would this procedure be a successful?
Yes, it would. You could still do it. You don’t have to lose weight for this procedure to be successful.

Physically what do you see, are you able to get into the smaller size pair of pants? Are things feeling better?
Things are feeling better. I have lost 2 pants sizes so just by doing the procedure. The reason I went in to see Dr. Darm is I saw something on his website and it intrigued me because it was so non-invasive and it was just one of those things – I just wanted to get rid of the you know like the ‘muffin top’.

I would assume for a lot of people when they had this procedure they’ve tried diet, they’ve tried exercise but we’re talking parts of the body that it’s hard to get those places sculpted to the shape they want.
So many people, they exercise, they diet and they just have that little bit left basically. And so you know the chin for example.

In just a short recovery period of time you can have these results, are they long lasting?
They’re long lasting. You’re killing the fat cell. The fat is not gonna come back in that area and so it’s really a very long term minimally invasive procedure.

Was there any pain involved?
There was discomfort. I wouldn’t call it excruciating pain I would call some minimal discomfort for a couple of days.

What are your friends say to you now?
As time goes on, it’s more noticeable just like ‘Oh I’m starting to see some curves there’ as time goes on because it’s a process. I mean, I didn’t just go just walking at the hospital out of his hospital ‘Oh yeah you look fantastic’. It was a process and one of the great things about going to Dr. Darm’s office was the fact that those expectations were set. It wasn’t like ‘OK well I see you here your 48 now you’re gonna go walking out size 2’. That there was no unrealistic expectations. Dr. Darm and his entire staff were just fantastic.

What causes sun damage?
"Well, sun damage is obviously the exposure to the sun and excess exposure without protection. Tanning is bad but sun burns are worst and tanning beds can actually cause cancers in young people."

So you have sunburns earlier in you life, when do you see the negative results of sun burns?
"You might see the results 40 or 50 years later. So once the skin has been damaged to some degrees it is damaged forever and you may have to treat it forever."

Is rosacea hereditary?
"Rosacea is a hereditary disorder but it can actually be made worse by sun exposure and over exposure."

Libby, you were treated by Dr. Darm by both sun damaged skin and rosacea. What treatments did you received?
"Initially, I went to Jerry (Dr. Darm) to have the sun damage and rosacea taken care of and the most prominent change was with the sun damage, which is predominantly in both side of my face along with something a kin to pregnancy mask discoloration and it was amazing that the treatments were done in 10 days almost to the day that Jerry (Dr. Darm) said it would happen. Dr. Darm said it will all flaked off from after having the laser treatments done and beautiful skin."

How's the laser treatments work?
"It is an intense pulsed light device (IPL) with the radio frequency (RF) added and so it helps with the rosacea, it helps with the flushing, it helps with the redness, with the spider veins and for the sun damage the little "brownish spots" or "liver spots" are what targeted basically."

Is it painful of you to have these treatments?
"No, not at all. Its just feel like a little zap, the description given before the treatment is that it feels like a rubber band snapping and that's pretty much on target. A gel is placed on and there's a cooling air that keeps the skin at the good temperature. You don't really feel much at all."

What is that laser doing to the skin, is it taking away that skin cell or reversing something?
"The technical term is selective photothermolysis. The light heats up the target so the red vein or the brown spot while sparring the white skin. And we actually have treatments now for darker skin as well."

Will that treatment lasts forever or do you do maintenance?
"You got to do a redo every so often because remember once the skin is damaged it is damaged forever so you've got to come back. You might be three treatments initially and maybe once or twice a year."

What difference you have after you had it done?
"Oh the comments were, people will drop their jaws like when I went to work that week is like "what happen" and ever since I just love having what I called peaches and cream skin. I don't have ever to wear make-up again and that was my goal. I don't wear any make up at all, my skin is just wonderful."

Sun damage can occur through direct sunlight or by over exposure in a tanning booth. Over exposure causes premature aging, wrinkles, loss of skin elasticity, brownish spots known as "age spots" or "liver spots" and several types of cancer. Even dark skin can be damaged by the sun but very light skin is the most.

Intense pulsed light (IPL) devices used at Dr. Darm's Aesthetic Medicine, such as the Syneron IPL can target damaged areas while sparing undamaged areas. Biopsies of these areas have shown actual reversal of scarring, inflammation, broken capillaries, and pigmentation which characterized sun damaged skin. Unwanted hair can occur anywhere on the male or female body and a huge amount of time, effort, energy and money are spent getting rid of it, especially in Western cultures. Women in particular are anxious to eliminate unwanted hair on the face, underarms, bikini and leg areas, but also hair on the chest, nipples, arms, back and abdomen. Men are generally more concerned with extra hair on their back and neck. African Americans can suffer from a disease known as pseudofolliculitis barbi which can cause small bumps on the face and neck. This syndrome can easily be improved with laser hair removal using a certain type of laser. Sometimes patients can get an infection in the hair follicles known as folliculitis which can be improved by laser hair removal. Laser hair removal is a cheap and effective way to remove unwanted hair anywhere on the body.

Hair growth occurs in 3 distinct phases; growth, regression and resting. During the growth cycle the hair literally grows and gets longer and the root is surrounded by many blood vessels. It is during this phase that a hair can be “killed” by a laser by destroying the follicle or “root”. The laser harmlessly penetrates the skin, heats up the hair follicle and destroys the blood vessels nourishing the follicle. That hair will never grow again but other unborn hairs in surrounding areas will eventually grow. Over time and with multiple treatments timed to catch each new growth cycle virtually all the hairs can be destroyed. The second growth cycle is called the regression phase where the hair is present but has stopped growing. Since this hair is already “dying” and is not being nourished by blood vessels surrounding the root it cannot be “killed”. This hair will eventually fall out on its own but stays embedded for a while to give the body a little extra protection. The final growth cycle is called the resting phase where there is no hair present at all and put simply this represents an unborn hair. This hair cannot be killed until it begins to grow.

Each area of the body has a different growth cycle and therefore responds differently to laser hair removal. Facial hair grows the fastest but has fewer hairs in the growing phase at any given time and will therefore take many more treatments to remove. Hair in the bikini and underarms grows the slowest, has many more hairs in the growth cycle at any given time and therefore takes fewer treatments to reduce, typically 3 – 5. Facial hair may take as many as 15 treatments to effectively remove. Other areas such as the legs, chest and abdomen are intermediate. Hair on mens backs is very deep and may take as many as 15 treatments to effectively reduce. Nonetheless with each treatment since growing hairs are killed clients may not see any hair growth in the area for 3 – 6 weeks. Laser hair removal can therefore be used to permanently reduce growth but also to give clients a “ hair free interval.” There is a tremendous variability of response from one person to another and from one area to another on each client.

Many plastic surgeons say that there are three areas that can instantly age a person - their eyes, lips and neck. And while many people focus on facial features when it comes to deciding which surgical or non-surgical cosmetic procedures to consider, some experts say focusing on the neck is crucial.

"The front of the neck is one of the primary features we use to guess a person’s age," said a Texas-based plastic surgeon. "It often catches our eye first. Sagging neck skin is the telltale sign of true aging, so restoration of the neck is an important part of facial rejuvenation or facial plastic surgery."

Banding, wrinkling and fullness of the neck are among the things that make one's neck appear old. Experts say that each case must be considered independently to determine which method can result in a younger-looking neck area.

"The key is to identify the underlying problem," explains the expert. "Is it wrinkles, or is it only deep lines that bother the patient? Maybe it's just sagging skin, but not wrinkles. Perhaps the problem is both the skin and fat. Or, it could be all three: skin, fat and muscle."

Deep lines in the neck can be treated with Botox, excess fat in the neck can be removed with liposuction and loose skin can be tightened using radiofrequency or pulsed light skin tightening. In more severe cases, all three procedures may be utilized or a plastic surgeon will focus on improving the neck area during facelift surgery.

"If you properly correct the sagging neck in facial rejuvenation such as a face lift, that is the key to a youthful face and a happy patient," said the Texas-based surgeon.

Our center has performed over 10,000 rosacea treatments. We have now added a 1064 laser to our protocol which has dramatically increased the efficacy of treatment sessions. Once the unsightly spider veins and small red bumps are removed, flair-ups are dramatically reduced. Flushing is harder to completely eliminate but can be significantly reduced. The treatment itself helps to smooth the skin and repair some of the damage caused by Rosacea. Significant clearing takes 3-7 treatments but improvement is seen with each treatment. Occasionally, more difficult cases can take 10-15 treatments to clear. The treatments currently used are relatively painless with little or no downtime.

Touch up treatment will need to be performed periodically to keep the Rosacea under control. Appointments are usually scheduled 2-4 weeks apart until the desired results are achieved. Requiring Continuing Education for Your Staff

Certainly your employees were qualified for their positions when you hired them, but have they remained up to speed with relevant developments in the healthcare world? If not, you could be opening your practice up to a wide range of problems.

"Given the complexity of healthcare and the rapid pace of healthcare research, education for all who perform medical procedures should be a lifelong or career-long endeavor," says Dale Grube, associate dean of continuing education at the University of Kansas Medical Center Continuing Education in Kansas City, Ks.

Also, making sure staff is educated within the scopes of their job performance divides more efficiently within a practice the responsibility of remaining updated. "It is near impossible for healthcare providers that are heads-down in practice to stay current on every updated guideline, recommendation, or research on their own," says Daria Byrne, EdD, MSN, RN and clinical solutions analyst with MEDSEEK in Birmingham, Ala. "This is where continuing education comes in."

How staff education benefits you

Quite simply, continuing education is an important legal and medical safety measure for you, your practice, your staff and your patients.

"By effectively training your staff, you keep both your patients and employees protected," adds Dr. Jerry Darm, medical director for Aesthetic Medicine in Portland, Ore. "It also eliminates potential exposure to malpractice and workman comp claims."

Legal issues aside, continuing education keeps your staff motivated and growing, which translates into decreased employee turnover. "Staff turnover is both expensive and disruptive," says Amy Bernard, MS, BSN, RN-BC and director of continuing education for American Dental Institute and Western Schools in West Bridgewater, Mass. "Continuing education boosts staff confidence, morale, job satisfaction and productivity - all of which improve staff retention and performance."

Most importantly, Bernard adds, improved staff performance optimizes clinical outcomes for patients, resulting in greater patient satisfaction and heightened patient loyalty, which leads to greater pride and profitability for your practice.

What type of continuing education is best?

When considering which education measures to require of your staff, first look to your state medical and/or dental boards to see what's required and ensure that you're in compliance.Also consider basic certifications such as CPR, which may be necessary for your practice.

"Post-graduate continuing education requirements for nurses vary by state as do the requirements for pharmacists and other allied professionals," Grube says. "Health professionals should select accredited continuing education that is directly applicable to their scope of practice."

Also, it's wise for you to require your healthcare staff to get additional and/or required training on new procedures you're offering or on new equipment you're using, Grube advises.

"Look for programs or activities that will enhance job performance or practice," recommends Bernard. "Consider the direction the office practice is taking. Are there new technologies or procedures that might be incorporated into your office practice that you want staff to learn?"

And, don't forget to include employees in the decision-making process. "The employee should be involved in identifying what their needs are - what gaps in knowledge and/or skills they need to address to better meet the needs of their patients," Bernard contends.

Finally, assess your own quality gaps and identify educational opportunities and interventions that are directly relevant to addressing those gaps, Grube suggests. Seek out substantive and in-depth short courses that offer a performance-improvement component, particularly if your goal is to change your team's behavior.

Education issues to address

Time

It can be burdensome for staff to take either work or personal time out of their day to attend courses. Consider programs in which the instructor comes to your office to teach, either during lunch hour or immediately before or after hours. Online courses and e-learning that staff can complete at home are other time-saving options that can be accessed as needed so that skills remain fresh, says John A. Windsor, professor of surgery and head of the department of surgery at The University of Auckland in New Zealand.

Cost

Be sure to budget continuing education fees into the expenses of running an office. Consider it another cost of doing business that goes to strengthen the practice.

Accountability

Have your staff turn in their continuing education hours for review every six months to make sure that they don't miss deadlines for licensure, says Sylvia Wildfire, an EMT and owner of On-Call Medic/CPR Plus in Thousand Oaks, Calif.

Learning styles

Some people are auditory learners, others are visual and still others are kinesthetic and need hands-on learning. Provide different educational formats for different types of learners whenever possible to allow all employees to benefit.

While we don’t have much say in what type of skin we were given, we do have a choice in how we take care of the skin that we have. Taking care of our skin and protecting it from the sun is definitely the best way to show how much we love the skin we’re in.

Our expert contributor shares with us today about the importance of screening our skin from the sun. Dr. Darm discusses with us the effects that sun damage can have on our skin and how to avoid it.

“Sun Damage can occur through direct sunlight or by over exposure in a tanning booth. A small amount of sun is beneficial and activates vitamin D in the skin which helps make strong bones and teeth. Over exposure causes premature aging, wrinkles, loss of elasticity, brownish spots know as “age spots” or “liver spots” and several types of cancer. Even dark skin can be damaged by the sun, but very light skin is the most vulnerable.

Ultraviolet light liberates a “free radical” in the skin which leads to damage to the DNA in the cells. These cells can then produce an overabundance of melanin (brownish skin pigment) which can initially produce tanning, but later yields enlarged brownish areas. The over exposure can also lead to several types of skin cancers including melanomas. Sunburn accelerates these changes and is even more dangerous than constant tanning. Use sunscreen with both UVA and UVB protection and limit your exposure to the sun.”
